App of the Week: Another World 20th Anniversary
That’s right, ladies and gentlemen. It’s that time again… App of the Week! And, surprise, it’s another game. I’m entirely predictable, and I couldn’t give a damn because it’s a great pick this week.
Back in 1991, a developer by the name of Eric Chahi developed and released Another World, a sci-fi adventure game, on Amiga, Atari ST, Apple IIGS, and MS-DOS. It was a beautiful game at the time, featuring a lush and vivid alien world which our hero, Lester Knight Chaykin, accidentally portals himself to. It feels very similar to the original Prince of Persia or the PlayStation Oddworld games, but with a distinct science-fiction twist.
After being ported to numerous gaming systems over the decades, including the Super Nintendo, Sega’s Mega Drive and 3DO, Another World has finally made its debut on iOS, touting cleaner HD graphics for the first time, touch-screen controls and a revamped difficulty (the original game was incredibly challenging at its default setting.) The game’s fantastic music is also intact, creating a fantastic package for any nostalgic gamer.
But, even if you’ve never played Another World (or Out of This World, as it was called in America), there is a lot to enjoy and appreciate here. The game doesn’t feel dated at all thanks to the improved visuals, though the option to switch back to the original sprites thankfully exists in its menus. It’s also a fairly short adventure, which is great for a mobile experience on your iPhone or iPad.
Relive some classic gaming history and pick up Another World: 20th Anniversary. Oh, and don’t forget to run from the terrifying night-beast when you emerge from the lake. It’ll get ya.
