Among DC’s “New 52″ comics that are launching throughout the month of September, one of the most eagerly anticipated of the batch has to be Scott Snyder’s Batman.  Before the relaunch, Snyder was working one of the Bat’s other books, Detective Comics, and created some of the best modern Batman stories in existence.  Now that he has taken over the flagship Bat-book, does Batman’s first issue provide an adequate starting point for new readers while also preserving the previously established mythos?

Thankfully, the answer is a resounding, “Yes!”

The books begins with a bang, featuring Batman taking on half of Arkham Asylum all at once (though you won’t believe who he receives assistance from!)  The story does a great job at introducing all of the key players in Bruce Wayne’s life, such as Dick Grayson (Nightwing), Tim Drake (Red Robin), Damian Wayne (Robin), and even Alfred.  We are also presented with Bruce’s new mission for Gotham City, though his renewed passion for his home might be his undoing as well.

It’s great to see Bruce back in Gotham, though Grayson did a spectacular job filling the Bat-mantle for the last year or so.  And while I’m a bit sad to see Dick step down from his role as Batman, I am completely confident that Scott Snyder will make me forget all of my woes as he is one of the most capable and talented writers working in the business today.

Many people adore Batman, but few actually read his comic book adventures.  It’s a shame, really, as there have been some incredible stories told over the last several years from incredibly gifted writers.  However, if you’ve been hesitant to jump on board in the middle of a story, now is the perfect opportunity to begin reading Batman.  Snyder assures us that plenty has happened to Bruce and his extended family over the years that has not been erased, but gives just enough history that newcomers won’t feel confused or lost.  And, based on the surprise on the last page of the book, the direction that Batman will be headed over the next few months looks to be an intense rollercoaster ride.  Buy it at your local shop, or buy it digitally.  Either way, every Bat-fan needs to be reading this.
